Academic and academic-related staff (UCU)

The University has recognised the University and College Union (UCU), previously known as the Association of University Teachers (AUT), as the appropriate trade union for purposes of consultation and representation in respect of staff employed in University academic and academic-related posts.

The UCU helps its members in individual cases and its representatives may attend meetings within departments, where specified in the relevant procedures, or at the department’s discretion.

The UCU is consulted on collective matters, in formal meetings, by the employee relations team in University HR; contact Ruth Kinahan, Head of HR Policy or Kathryn Fairhurst Jones, HR Policy Officer.

Departments may also be contacted by representatives of the UCU committee, seeking their assistance to recruit new members. It is at the department’s discretion whether to provide assistance by occasionally allowing use of its facilities in this regard.

A Joint Consultative Committee with the Oxford UCU has been established, consisting of equal numbers of members appointed by the University and by the UCU. The Consultative Committee meets once in each term (and on such other occasions as either side requests) to consider and discuss matters relating to the terms and conditions of employment of academic and academic-related staff. The terms of reference of this committee are set out in the staff handbook for academic-related staff. Its chair is the Deputy Chair of People Committee
